Second-year BSc Civil Engineering students recently participated in an educational field visit to the Materials Testing and Research Directorate (MTRD) in Nairobi, where they gained practical exposure to construction materials testing and research procedures.
During the visit, students moved beyond classroom theory and engaged directly with laboratory-based testing techniques used in the construction industry. The sessions included demonstrations and practical experiences in concrete crushing tests, asphalt analysis, and other essential quality control procedures applied in infrastructure development.
The visit provided students with a deeper understanding of the rigorous testing protocols that ensure the safety, durability, and reliability of national infrastructure projects. It also offered an opportunity to interact with industry professionals and observe modern engineering laboratory equipment in operation.
